Is Your Arizona Home Too Dependent on the Grid?

Solar plus storage may provide both renewable generation and stored energy, but production changes with weather, season, shading, and system design.

A combined approach may be appropriate for a home requiring extended resilience, but complexity and cost increase.

HOW MUCH INDEPENDENCE IS ENOUGH?

Maximum energy independence is not always the most economical objective. Many homeowners need only essential-load backup and better control of selected high-cost electricity periods.

Create three lists: loads that must operate, loads that would be helpful, and loads that can remain off. Estimate the energy use of each and the desired outage duration. Then compare an essential-load system with extended and whole-home alternatives.

Review utility bills and rate plans. Identify outage history and heat-related risks. Inspect the electrical service and available installation space. Measure solar production and exports if solar already exists. Consider fuel availability and maintenance if evaluating a generator. Decide how much backup reserve should remain in the battery.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Your home may be too dependent on the grid if a short outage creates serious safety, financial, medical, or operational consequences—or if you have no strategy for managing changing electricity costs.

The goal is not necessarily to disconnect from the grid. It is to make grid dependence intentional, measured, and manageable.
