APS Battery Storage: Backup Power vs. Electricity Savings
An APS customer may consider a home battery for two very different reasons: keeping essential loads operating during an outage and managing electricity costs during normal operation. Those benefits should be evaluated separately before they are combined into one buying decision.
BACKUP POWER VALUE
When the grid goes down, a properly designed battery system can automatically power selected circuits. Common priorities include refrigeration, lighting, internet equipment, garage-door operation, medical devices, and limited air-conditioning loads.
Runtime is not a fixed promise. It depends on usable battery capacity, the appliances operating at the same time, outdoor temperature, battery state of charge, and whether solar panels can recharge the battery during daylight hours. An installer should complete a load analysis instead of relying on a simple “whole-home” label.
EVERYDAY ELECTRICITY VALUE
During normal operation, a battery may charge from excess solar production or at a lower-cost time and discharge when purchased grid electricity is more expensive. The potential value depends on the APS service plan, the difference between time periods, household consumption patterns, solar production, export compensation, battery efficiency, and control settings.
APS offers multiple residential service plans. The best operating strategy for one customer may not be appropriate for another. A homeowner should compare actual hourly usage and at least 12 months of bills before estimating savings.
WHY CHANGING APS COSTS MATTER
APS explains that bill adjustors can change portions of a customer’s bill between major base-rate cases. APS states that its February 2026 Power Supply Adjustment increased the bill for a typical residential customer using 1,050 kWh by about $3.15 per month. APS also states that a June 2026 transmission adjustment added about $1.01 per month for that usage level.
Those changes do not prove that any battery will pay for itself. They do demonstrate why an energy decision should consider both today’s bill and a transparent range of possible future grid costs.
BACKUP POWER AND SAVINGS ARE NOT THE SAME THING
A battery sized for outage resilience may be larger than the system that produces the best bill-management economics. Conversely, a system configured mainly for daily cycling may need reserve settings to ensure that enough stored energy remains available when an outage occurs.
Ask the installer to show separate scenarios for essential-load backup, extended backup, solar self-consumption, time-based operation, and any combination of those goals.
QUESTIONS TO ASK
Which APS service plan am I currently using? Which hours drive most of my bill? How much solar do I export annually? What backup loads will the system support? What reserve level will be maintained? What assumptions are used for electricity prices, degradation, efficiency, maintenance, and financing?
THE BOTTOM LINE
For APS customers, battery storage can provide meaningful reliability and may provide everyday electricity value. Whether the combination makes financial sense must be calculated for the specific home.
