1,700 Arizonans Push Back on Rate Hikes: What Can a Home Battery Do?

More than 1,700 Arizona consumers are pushing back on higher electricity bills. Consumer Reports announced on October 7 that it submitted petition signatures asking the Arizona Corporation Commission to reject proposed APS and TEP rate increases. Its APS letter describes a proposed 16% residential increase, or about $240 more per year; TEP’s request has been described as approximately 14%. These are proposed increases, not newly approved rates, and individual bill impacts vary. Consumer advocates have also challenged the shareholder returns sought in the cases. While regulators consider those requests, homeowners can look at how much power they buy during expensive periods. A properly designed home battery can store solar energy—or charge at lower-cost times where permitted—and supply selected household loads during higher-priced evening hours. It does not eliminate utility charges or guarantee savings: your rate plan, usage, battery size, charging losses, outage reserve and installed cost all matter.
